About Beach Soccer

Although a relatively new sport in Australia the first games of Beach Soccer started more than 30 years ago on the beaches of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. The game quickly became an art form with highly skilled players doing diving headers, bicycle kick and spectacular tricks. Beach soccer also known as Sand Soccer is now widely played on beaches all over the world.

The participation of internationally renowned players such as flamboyant Frenchman and Manchester United legend Eric Cantona has helped to expand television coverage to large audiences in over 170 countries worldwide, making Beach Soccer one of the fastest growing sports in the world. In 1994, the first North American Sand Soccer Championships took place in Virginia Beach, Vancouver. This tournament has grown from 28 teams in 1994 to over 950 in 2009.

In 2004 FIFA made Beach Soccer an official sport under their banner. A year later, the inaugural Beach Soccer World Cup was played in Brazil. The first Beach Soccer World Cup was won by a French team coached by Eric Cantona. In 2009 the first Australian Men’s Beach Football team competed in the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup 2009 Asian Qualifiers in Dubai. The tournament involved 16 nations including United Arab Emirates, Portugal, Uruguay, Solomom Islands, Spain, Cote d Ivoire, El Salvador, Russia, Costa Rica, Argentina, Italy, Brazil, Nigeria and Switzerland.

The Gold Coast Beach Soccer Championships

The staging of the inaugural Gold Coast Beach Soccer Championships follows the highly successful trial beach soccer competition held as part of the 2009 Gold Coast Champions Cup. The co-founding and continuing Director of the highly acclaimed Gold Coast Champions Cup and other long term volunteer supporters of the event have responded to requests from participants in the trial competition by announcing their intention to stage an international beach soccer tournament annually at Kirra Beach on the Gold Coast. The inaugural Gold Coast Beach Soccer Championships will be conducted at Kirra Beach on the Gold Coast from 8th-10th July 2010.

Tournament proceeds to help Youth on the Gold Coast!

All proceeds derived from the staging of the Gold Coast Beach Soccer Championships will go to the Asteros Association. The Asteros association is a not for profit incorporated body that with a sole purpose of financially supporting early intervention personal development programs for ‘At Risk’ youth on the Gold Coast.

The Gold Coast Beach Soccer Championships

Where:	Kirra Surf Life Saving Club
When	7th - 10th July 2010
Time:	8.30 am - 4.30 pm daily
Competition Format:	5 a side (minimum 4 games per team), Round Robin + Finals Series.
Team Composition:	5 on field players with a maximum of 10 players per team. Unlimited interchange.
Age Categories:	Youth - 10, 11, 12, 14, 16 and 18 Open Men & Open Women Corporations Surf Life Saving Clubs Tertiary Education Institutions
Competition Format:	Round Robin days 1 and 2. Semi Finals & Finals day 3.
Game Time:	(3) periods of (10) minutes with 3 minutes between periods.
Tournament Cost:	$25 per player. (maximum 10 players per team).
Tournament Prizes:	Trophies Winners and Runners up. Random draw for every age group. Give away set of tournament strips designed especially for the tournament by Attack Sports (value $475).

Gold Coast Beach Soccer Championships are proud to announce that Climate Wave Enterprises (CWE) have been retained to provide environmental management for the event.

CWE will provide consultation and operational skills for the event to become more sustainable, to save money and resources and to spread a positive message to the community.

All these procedures have the aim to reduce the carbon footprint of the event and enhance people’s perception in regard to the natural environment.

The Gold Coast Beach Soccer Championships has established an ongoing association with Jeff Sundy & Christiaan Wagner from Beach Soccer Promotions that runs the Copa Cabana Beach Soccer Tournaments and West Coast Soccer Academy. Jeff Sundy is President of the The United States Beach Soccer Federation in the USA.

Copa Cabana run 10 tournaments in California, Las Vegas, Florida and soon to be in Atlantic City.

Jeff Sundy is very excited with this partnership and hopes to bring teams to the Gold Coast and as well to see teams from Australia come to the beautifull beaches of Santa Monica, California.
